2014 Devil Dog Football – Week 09 – at LR Christian

A two-point conversion attempt to win the game in overtime failed for Morrilton and the Devil Dog football team was eliminated from playoff contention with a devastating 35-34 loss at Little Rock Christian Friday night. The Devil Dogs trailed by 14 points in the second half before a late rally forced the extra period. The Warriors scored on the first play of overtime on a ten-yard run by Damarea Crockett and kicked the extra point to go ahead, 35-28. The Devil Dogs answered on a one-yard scoring run by Terrence Minor, but the decision to try for the win instead of kicking the extra point to force a second overtime period backfired as quarterback Jalen Wright was stopped behind the line of scrimmage, allowing the Warriors to escape with the win, greatly enhancing their playoff chances.

After the Warriors scored early in the third quarter to take a 14-0 lead, sophomore Grahm Heidenreich returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to get the Dogs on the board. After another Little Rock Christian touchdown put the Warriors on top, 21-7, junior Trey Blakley scored on touchdown runs of 15 and eight yards to tie the game at 21.

Little Rock Christian would regain the lead with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before Wright found sophomore Lane Granberry for a ten-yard touchdown pass with 2:25 remaining to get the game to overtime. That play earned the Dixon Family Dental Big Smile Play of the Game.

Blakley finished with 85 yards rushing and the two touchdowns to take home Colton’s Offensive Player of the Game honors. Senior Kendall Brown was the Colton’s Defensive Player of the Game after collecting seven tackles and a sack. Minor finished the game with 147 yards rushing and one touchdown and now has 1,430 yards for the season. The senior will need to gain 162 yards in this week’s game to break the school’s single-season rushing record of 1,591 yards set by James McDaniel in 1971.

The loss drops Morrilton’s record to 3-6 overall, 2-4 in the 5A West. The Devil Dogs will wrap up their season against Clarksville this Friday on Senior Night in Morrilton
