This Military Dish Is the Best Hangover Meal Youll Ever Eat

Creamed Chipped Beef is a stick-to-your-ribs, no-frills meal that’s been a military standby for more than a century. In 1910’s Manual for Army Cooks, you’ll find the dish described as a creamy blend of salted and dried chipped beef, evaporated milk, butter, and flour—all doled out over a few slices of toast (a.k.a. shingles).

If the meal sounds like the nutritional equivalent of eating a pile of bacon cheddar cheese fries, fear not. You can still satisfy your hangover cravings without busting your gut.

Logen Crew, executive chef of Current Fish & Oyster in Salt Lake City, UT, developed this recipe, which was inspired by his grandfather, a former cook in the U.S. Navy.

Crew’s rendition contains whole ingredients (no evaporated milk, here) and gravy built on beef fat (that only sounds decadent).

Creamed Chipped Beef

Recipe from Logen Crew, executive chef at Current Fish & Oyster

What you’ll need:
1 lb. ground beef (80% lean)
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, diced
Salt and pepper, to taste
3½ cups whole milk
½ cup vegetable or chicken stock
1 tsp fresh sage, chopped, plus more for garnish
½ cup all-purpose flour
4 medium ¼-inch thick slices sourdough bread, toasted

Related: 5 Breakfasts You Can Make On Sunday, but Eat All Week

How to make it:
1. In a large, deep skillet over medium-high, heat the oil. Crumble in the beef and cook, stirring frequently, until browned, about 8 minutes. Drain enough grease so that some still coats the skillet. Add the onions, and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour 2 ½ cups of the milk and all of the stock into the pan. Using a wooden spoon, scrape up any bits from the bottom of the skillet. Mix in the sage then bring to a boil. Cook, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
2. In a small bowl, mix the flour into the last cup of milk until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture into the skillet, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until thickened, 3 to 4 minutes. (If the gravy is too thick, thin with a little additional milk. If it is too thin, simmer longer, or add more flour.) Taste and adjust seasonings before serving.
3. To serve, place 1 slice of toasted bread on a plate and smother with the gravy. Garnish with sage. Makes 4 servings.

Heres What Happens If You Have a Medical Emergency35000 Feet In the Air

After reporting the incident to medical personnel on the ground, the airplane turned around and returned to Ireland to rush him to a hospital for further treatment.

Thankfully, Staub recovered—and was even able to throw out the first pitch at Citi Field a week later.

The thought of experiencing a medical emergency like Staub did when you’re thousands of feet in the air is terrifying. But what measures are in place to make sure you make it back to ground alive?

What Happens During an In-Air Medical Emergency

Scary as it may seem, experiencing a serious health incident when you’re in-air is actually pretty uncommon. Medical emergencies occur in roughly 1 out of 600 commercial flights, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

And there’s no evidence that the act of flying makes serious health problems like stroke or heart attack more likely, says Christian Martin-Gill, M.D., an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, who consults with airlines from the ground in the event of a medical emergency.

Still, if something serious does happen, you’re in good hands—even if there’s no doctor actually on board.

“There’s some variability between airlines, but the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) requires flight attendants to be trained in using an external defibrillator and in basic first aid,” says Martin-Gill.

That means that they’d be able to provide immediate treatment for a heart attack or stroke. They can also handle things like minor injuries or lightheadedness caused by dehydration.

Related: 6 Guys Who Suffered Heart Attacks Tell You What It Really Feels Like

But if a flight attendant can’t solve a problem on his own—or if they see signs of a serious issue, like fainting or heavy bleeding—he can call in reinforcements.

Airlines coordinate with 24-hour medical call centers like the University of Pittsburgh’s STAT-MD Communications Center. When the flight crew calls in, they can connect with a consulting physician like Dr. Martin-Gill to make a diagnosis and decide on a treatment plan.

“We discuss the situation with the pilot or attendant to figure out what’s going on with the patient,” he says. “Then we’ll come up with a list of recommendations.”

Treatment could be something simple—like having a lightheaded passenger drink some water.

It could also involve administering drugs from the plane’s on-board medical kit.

These kits include things like epinephrine or antihistamine for allergic reactions, anticonvulsants for seizures, nitroglycerin tablets for chest pain, or even meds to deal with postpartum bleeding if a woman gives birth during a flight.

Related: The Better Man Project—2,000+ Awesome Tips on How to Live Your Healthiest Life

When the situation is really serious—like in the case of a heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, or seizure—the flight crew and the consulting physician, along with dispatchers on the ground, decide if the plane should make an emergency landing.

When that happens, 911 is notified, so an ambulance is ready and waiting to take the sick person to the hospital when the plane touches down.

What If There Is a Doctor On Board?

In close to half of all flights, there’s a doctor, nurse, or paramedic on board to help as a volunteer, according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine

Often, they’ll assess a sick passenger and weigh in with their recommendations. And they might administer treatment that needs to happen right away, like CPR.

Related: How to Perform CPR the Right Way

But they’re not expected to call the shots—that goes to the consulting physician on call.

After all, a dermatologist or a pediatric nurse who just happen to be on the flight might not be as experienced dealing with something like a heart attack as the consulting emergency physician on the ground may be.

Why Most Health Problems On Airplanes Aren’t Serious

Most of the medical mishaps that strike in the friendly skies aren’t life-threatening.

It’s more likely that you’ll experience minor health issues due to the plane’s environment. You may get lightheaded, pass out, have trouble breathing, feel nauseous, or vomit.

That’s because even though cabins are pressurized, the air that high up in the clouds is still pretty thin.

“There’s less total oxygen up there,” says Dr. Martin-Gill. Your body has to work harder to get as much oxygen as it needs.

Plus, practically everyone is prone to dehydration—due to a combination of the dry cabin air, and the fact people tend to drink less while traveling—and weird eating and sleep schedules while traveling, Dr. Martin-Gill adds.

That can mean that even healthy people can sometimes feel sick when they fly.

How to Stay Safe During Your Flight

If you don’t normally have issues at high altitudes, you probably don’t need to worry.

Air travel does comes with a slightly higher risk for developing deep vein thrombosis, a serious condition where blood clots form in your legs.

But it’s not from being high in the air—it’s from sitting for many hours at a time, which can make it harder for blood to circulate in your legs.

If you’re young and healthy, it probably isn’t really a concern, Dr. Martin-Gill says. But you can takes steps to keep clots from forming—especially on longer flights—by occasionally getting up and walking around, recommends the CDC.

Also, it’s never a bad idea to make sure you’re well hydrated. “I’d recommend drinking a bottle of water before the flight,” says Dr. Martin-Gill.

And if you have a preexisting medical condition, like a heart or lung condition that requires the use of supplemental oxygen, talk to your doctor.

He can help you figure out if you should notify the airline about any special needs, like oxygen therapy. If you let them know ahead of time, it’ll be easy for them to accommodate you once you’re on board, says Dr. Martin-Gill.

This Man Stretched 10 Minutes a Day For a Month. Heres What Happened

I called Doug Kechijian, D.P.T., of Resilient Performance Physical Therapy in New York City. A stretching expert, he told me that everyone has imbalances and mobility restrictions. We sit too much and don’t put our bodies into enough different positions.

Related: THE 21-DAY METASHRED—an At-Home Body-Shredding Program That Helped One Guy Lose 25 Pounds of Fat In 6 Weeks!

His prescription? Ten minutes a day of mobility moves.

They felt more like kung fu than calisthenics. Take the modified pigeon stretch.

“Most people stand with their hips shifted to the right, which causes their left hip to tighten up,” Kechijian says. This pose helps redistribute that weight.

As I sank into it, the painful area in my hip felt like it was being pulled apart—in a good way.

Other moves seemed meant for contortionists. Instead of reps, each was done for a series of extremely deep breaths, a signal for your body to release muscle tightness.

I felt relief after the first day, so I kept the circuit up. On gym days it was my warmup. On rest days, I did it in the office or at home in front of the TV. I ignored the odd looks from my coworkers and girlfriend, who dubbed Kechijian “the witch doctor.”

Related: The 4 Mobility Moves You Should Do If You Train Hard

It was totally worth it. Within a month my pain was a memory. I was maneuvering my body into positions I’d never dreamed of reaching, like a deep squat. Being more limber allowed me to use better form and build new muscles, but I’ll let my PRs speak for me: I soon doubled my pullup and pushup numbers to 15 and 50, respectively, and I could run 1 ½ miles in under nine minutes.

Then one night, as I sank into the pigeon pose, I noticed my girlfriend staring at me. “Damn, the witch doctor got you jacked,” she said.

Want to get mobilized? Try the four stretching moves below. You need just 10 minutes. That’s not a tough stretch.

Here’s how to do it: Perform each exercise every day for the prescribed time or number of reps. Do them before your workout on training days, and intermittently throughout your workday or while winding down on your rest days, says Doug Kechijian, D.P.T., who created this routine.

Counterweight Deep Squat

Grab two light dumbbells and place a foam roller between your thighs. Push your knees forward and then squat until your butt is just above the floor. (Use the lightest weight that allows you to achieve this position.) Try to round your spine by “tucking” your pelvis. From that position, take 5 long, deep breaths. Stand back up. That’s 1 rep. Do 3 to 5.

Couch Stretch

Assume a half-kneeling position with your back knee close to a box or wall; your back shin should be roughly parallel to the box or wall. You may need to hold on to something at first. Hold the position for 1 to 2 minutes as you contract the stretched leg’s hamstring. Repeat with your other leg.

Modified Pigeon

Get down on all fours and place a pillow or foam roller under your left knee. Lift your right knee and place it behind and to the left of your left calf. Rock your hips back and forth for 2 minutes. You should feel your left hip stretch. Switch sides and repeat.

Lat Hang

Hang from a pullup bar. Squeeze your glutes to slightly tilt your pelvis forward. Breathe in deeply. Breathe out as much air as you can–you should feel your lats stretch. Take 5 deep breaths. That’s 1 rep. Do 3 to 5.

FAIR USE ACT NOTICE ———— WATCH THIS !!! All references sources attached below:

The video images show police treating people as if they were in Alabama during the civil rights era. Cops shooting at women and children and releasing a K-9 dog that nearly attacked a mother holding her child.

July 21, 2012- “Video captured by a KCAL-TV crew showed a chaotic scene in which officers fired beanbag rounds as some people ducked to the ground while others scattered screaming. A man is seen yelling at an officer even as a weapon is pointed at him; two adults huddled to shield a boy and girl. Meanwhile, a police dog ran into several people sitting on the grass, including a woman and child in a stroller, before biting a man in the arm.”

One man said, “They just started shooting.”
Police also set a K-9 officer on one woman and a bystander they said were agitating the situation. Said Susan Lopez, “I had my baby with me. My baby! The dog scratched me and then grabbed me.” She added, “They shot at me while I was holding a baby!” Another woman yelled, “They just shot at us, they shot at a little kid, too.”

A police shooting that left a man dead led to a violent clash as angry witnesses threw bottles at officers who responded with tear gas and beanbag rounds to suppress the crowd, authorities said. The man was shot in front of an apartment complex around 4 p.m. Saturday following a foot chase, Anaheim Sgt. Bob Dunn said. He died three hours later at a hospital. source: http://ift.tt/1SULX7g;

(Bottles being thrown at officers or aggressive actions against officers cannot be verified at this time.)

Some in the crowd said they had inhaled some of the pepper spray during the melee. Joel Hunt, 21, of Fullerton was in the area visiting a friend when the shooting happened. He was part of the crowd, and he said his throat was still burning from the effects of being sprayed.

Rojas said a stroller with her 1-year-old grandson was toppled over and the baby was nearly attacked by a police dog that escaped from its handler. Dunn said a police dog had accidently escaped from a K-9 officer who then tried to regain control of the dog. Dunn said there were injuries related with the escaped dog but he doesn’t know the extent, adding that this incident and melee are under investigation.
