If you are putting your baby into a nursery, you want to make sure that there are going to be other children around of a similar age. Your baby will have fun in a nursery where he can interact with other babies.

When you have gathered as much advice as possible from family and friends about their child care experiences you can also turn to the internet, your local council and other resources to read reviews on the various nurseries.

The next step would be to physically go to these nurseries to check them out and see the facilities for yourself. It is a good opportunity to meet the staff. Do the children look happy and stimulated? Are there plenty of colourful toys and games around for them? How do the staff interact with the children? Do you have a good feeling about this place? Occasionally it is fine to go with your gut instinct.

Child minders

An alternative to nursery child care is to use child minders. Child minders look after babies and children in their own homes. On average they care for about 3-5 children. As well as being registered with the local authority they have to be have a police check and the local authority also inspect their homes on a regular basis for safety. They can be a good option and your child will be just as happy and safe as in a nursery. I have found child minders to be more flexible, when the need arises, than nurseries, but that is just my personal view. You can obtain a current list of registered child minders from your local council.

Nannies or Au Pairs

Some parents are lucky enough to be able to afford a nanny or au pair living with them in the family home. Nannies tend to be more qualified and will cost you more and they care for your child in your own home. Depending on your circumstances they could live-in with you. Au pairs are usually foreign nationals who want to study English and will live in your home and care for your child. They live as part of your family for up to two years so you need to be comfortable with having someone else living in your home with you. They will be responsible for your child care as well as doing some light housework and they receive a small wage for personal use. Other expenses such as their food and travel costs you would provide.

It is always advisable to carry out as much research as possible, it will give you confidence before you proceed. After all, you want the best child care experience for your child. So that you are not worrying all day when you are at work you need to feel comfortable with your decision. CAMP HUMPHREYS — An aerobithon was held at the Super Gym May 19, with participants dancing, spinning, and jumping their way to better fitness.

“It was great,” said Elvia Palumbo, one of the Zumba instructors for the event. “This was a great way to introduce all of the classes offered in the Super Gym.”

The aerobithon included a warm-up session, followed by Zumba, a stationary bicycle workout and yoga.

“We worked the total body,” said Karen Morton, who organized the aerobithon. “Exercising like this helps you feel better about yourself.”

Morton once weighed 260 pounds, but turned her life around with regular workouts and can now say, “I think I look good for my age.”

Blair Bogle, who also participated in last year’s aerobithon, likewise praised the virtues of diet and exercise.

“Living a healthy life is an everyday thing,” she said.

“I think the energy is high and people are into taking care of their body for a lifetime,” Morton added. “This is a lifestyle for me.”

Also participating was the husband-wife team of Peter and Christi Herring, who have lost a total of 73 pounds this year.

“This was meant for younger people,” Mrs. Herring said with a laugh. “But I like it.”

This Military Dish Is the Best Hangover Meal Youll Ever Eat

Creamed Chipped Beef is a stick-to-your-ribs, no-frills meal that’s been a military standby for more than a century. In 1910’s Manual for Army Cooks, you’ll find the dish described as a creamy blend of salted and dried chipped beef, evaporated milk, butter, and flour—all doled out over a few slices of toast (a.k.a. shingles).

If the meal sounds like the nutritional equivalent of eating a pile of bacon cheddar cheese fries, fear not. You can still satisfy your hangover cravings without busting your gut.

Logen Crew, executive chef of Current Fish & Oyster in Salt Lake City, UT, developed this recipe, which was inspired by his grandfather, a former cook in the U.S. Navy.

Crew’s rendition contains whole ingredients (no evaporated milk, here) and gravy built on beef fat (that only sounds decadent).  

Creamed Chipped Beef

Recipe from Logen Crew, executive chef at Current Fish & Oyster

What you’ll need:
1 lb. ground beef (80% lean)
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, diced
Salt and pepper, to taste
3½ cups whole milk
½ cup vegetable or chicken stock
1 tsp fresh sage, chopped, plus more for garnish
½ cup all-purpose flour
4 medium ¼-inch thick slices sourdough bread, toasted

How to make it:
1. In a large, deep skillet over medium-high, heat the oil. Crumble in the beef and cook, stirring frequently, until browned, about 8 minutes. Drain enough grease so that some still coats the skillet. Add the onions, and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour 2 ½ cups of the milk and all of the stock into the pan. Using a wooden spoon, scrape up any bits from the bottom of the skillet. Mix in the sage then bring to a boil. Cook, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
2. In a small bowl, mix the flour into the last cup of milk until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture into the skillet, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until thickened, 3 to 4 minutes. (If the gravy is too thick, thin with a little additional milk. If it is too thin, simmer longer, or add more flour.) Taste and adjust seasonings before serving.
3. To serve, place 1 slice of toasted bread on a plate and smother with the gravy. Garnish with sage. Makes 4 servings.

Heres What Happens If You Have a Medical Emergency35000 Feet In the Air

After reporting the incident to medical personnel on the ground, the airplane turned around and returned to Ireland to rush him to a hospital for further treatment.

Thankfully, Staub recovered—and was even able to throw out the first pitch at Citi Field a week later.

The thought of experiencing a medical emergency like Staub did when you’re thousands of feet in the air is terrifying. But what measures are in place to make sure you make it back to ground alive?

What Happens During an In-Air Medical Emergency

Scary as it may seem, experiencing a serious health incident when you’re in-air is actually pretty uncommon. Medical emergencies occur in roughly 1 out of 600 commercial flights, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine. 

And there’s no evidence that the act of flying makes serious health problems like stroke or heart attack more likely, says Christian Martin-Gill, M.D., an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, who consults with airlines from the ground in the event of a medical emergency.

Still, if something serious does happen, you’re in good hands—even if there’s no doctor actually on board.

“There’s some variability between airlines, but the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) requires flight attendants to be trained in using an external defibrillator and in basic first aid,” says Martin-Gill.

That means that they’d be able to provide immediate treatment for a heart attack or stroke. They can also handle things like minor injuries or lightheadedness caused by dehydration.

But if a flight attendant can’t solve a problem on his own—or if they see signs of a serious issue, like fainting or heavy bleeding—he can call in reinforcements. 

Airlines coordinate with 24-hour medical call centers like the University of Pittsburgh’s STAT-MD Communications Center. When the flight crew calls in, they can connect with a consulting physician like Dr. Martin-Gill to make a diagnosis and decide on a treatment plan.  

“We discuss the situation with the pilot or attendant to figure out what’s going on with the patient,” he says. “Then we’ll come up with a list of recommendations.” 

Treatment could be something simple—like having a lightheaded passenger drink some water.

It could also involve administering drugs from the plane’s on-board medical kit. 

These kits include things like epinephrine or antihistamine for allergic reactions, anticonvulsants for seizures, nitroglycerin tablets for chest pain, or even meds to deal with postpartum bleeding if a woman gives birth during a flight.

When the situation is really serious—like in the case of a heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, or seizure—the flight crew and the consulting physician, along with dispatchers on the ground, decide if the plane should make an emergency landing. 

When that happens, 911 is notified, so an ambulance is ready and waiting to take the sick person to the hospital when the plane touches down.

What If There Is a Doctor On Board?

In close to half of all flights, there’s a doctor, nurse, or paramedic on board to help as a volunteer, according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine

Often, they’ll assess a sick passenger and weigh in with their recommendations. And they might administer treatment that needs to happen right away, like CPR.

But they’re not expected to call the shots—that goes to the consulting physician on call. 

After all, a dermatologist or a pediatric nurse who just happen to be on the flight might not be as experienced dealing with something like a heart attack as the consulting emergency physician on the ground may be. 

Why Most Health Problems On Airplanes Aren’t Serious

Most of the medical mishaps that strike in the friendly skies aren’t life-threatening. 

It’s more likely that you’ll experience minor health issues due to the plane’s environment. You may get lightheaded, pass out, have trouble breathing, feel nauseous, or vomit. 

That’s because even though cabins are pressurized, the air that high up in the clouds is still pretty thin. 

“There’s less total oxygen up there,” says Dr. Martin-Gill. Your body has to work harder to get as much oxygen as it needs. 

Plus, practically everyone is prone to dehydration—due to a combination of the dry cabin air, and the fact people tend to drink less while traveling—and weird eating and sleep schedules while traveling, Dr. Martin-Gill adds. 

That can mean that even healthy people can sometimes feel sick when they fly.  

How to Stay Safe During Your Flight

If you don’t normally have issues at high altitudes, you probably don’t need to worry. 

Air travel does comes with a slightly higher risk for developing deep vein thrombosis, a serious condition where blood clots form in your legs. 

But it’s not from being high in the air—it’s from sitting for many hours at a time, which can make it harder for blood to circulate in your legs.  

If you’re young and healthy, it probably isn’t really a concern, Dr. Martin-Gill says. But you can takes steps to keep clots from forming—especially on longer flights—by occasionally getting up and walking around, recommends the CDC.  

Also, it’s never a bad idea to make sure you’re well hydrated. “I’d recommend drinking a bottle of water before the flight,” says Dr. Martin-Gill.  

And if you have a preexisting medical condition, like a heart or lung condition that requires the use of supplemental oxygen, talk to your doctor. 

He can help you figure out if you should notify the airline about any special needs, like oxygen therapy. If you let them know ahead of time, it’ll be easy for them to accommodate you once you’re on board, says Dr. Martin-Gill.
