If you’ve been sweating, a watery discharge from your ear is probably the result of your perspiration leaking down into your ear and mixing with the wax, says Brett Comer, M.D., an assistant professor and otolaryngologist at the University of Kentucky.

But if you haven’t been sweating, and the watery wax is greenish or dark yellow, that could indicate an ear infection, he says.

It’s sticky or dry.

For all of us, it’s one or the other. And your type can provide clues to your genetic ancestry. Research appearing in the journal Nature Genetics finds most people of Asian descent have dry earwax, while people of African or European descent have sticky or “wet” wax. 

The study authors say this was a genetic adaptation to the climates in which our ancestors evolved. 

It has a strong odor. 

You may have an infection or damage in the middle part of your ear. This can lead to a number of symptoms that, together, doctors refer to as “chronic otitis media.” 

One of those symptoms: “You could get a foul-smelling drainage from your ear,” Dr. Comer says. If your middle ear is messed up, you may also notice problems with your sense of balance, a ringing in your ears, or the sensation that your ear is full or blocked. See your doctor.

You notice when it leaks out.

Infections or tears inside your eardrum can lead to the formation of an abnormal skin growth called a “cholesteatoma,” Dr. Comer explains. “It’s a kind of a cyst-like structure that leads to debris from the ear filling up the ear canal.” 

Rather than the imperceptible discharge you’re used to, ear gunk may come out in a noticeable trickle or clump. Pressure and pain in your ear are also symptoms of a cholesteatoma.

You don’t seem to have any. 

If your earwax pulls a vanishing act—like, you don’t seem to make it any more—there’s a very small chance you have a rare and not-well-understood condition called “keratitis obturans,” Dr. Comer says. 

“Instead of coming out gradually on its own, the wax builds up inside your ear until you have this very hard plug,” he explains. On the off chance you have this going on in your ear, you’re likely to experience other symptoms like pain or fullness, he adds.

It’s flaky. 

You’re not sick. You’re just getting older. “As people age, the wax tends to get more flaky as opposed to like peanut butter,” Dr. Comer says. 

Don’t freak out. “Glands in general tend to dry out as we get older,” he explains.

The Genetic Trait That Might Make You More Likely to Develop Harder-To-Treat Skin Cancer

People with two copies of the gene variant are usually redheads with pale, freckled skin that burns instead of tans.

The researchers discovered that people with the “redhead gene” had 42 percent more sun-associated mutations in their melanomas than those with normal MC1R genes did.

That increase is equivalent to an extra 21 years of aging—meaning a whole lot more time to rack up additional sun exposure, a top risk factor of melanoma, says study author David Adams, Ph.D., senior group leader at the Sanger Institute. 

UV light likely penetrates the DNA of redheads more easily due to their lack of protective pigment in their skin. This can disrupt their genes and potentially lead to the mutations that can cause skin cancer, he says.

This increase in DNA mutations tells us two important things: First, it shows that redheads are more likely to develop melanoma in the first place, says Adams.

But it also points to the possibility that the melanomas they do develop might grow faster and be harder to treat, since mutations may make tumors less predictable.

Surprisingly, though, redheads aren’t the only ones at risk: Blondes, or even brunettes,with pale skin and freckles can still carry one copy of the redhead gene, which makes them just as susceptible to the mutations as actual redheads are, he says. 

So how’s a guy to know his risk?

Freckles may be a key that you carry one copy of the gene, Adams says. And if you have a redheaded parent, then you also carry at least one copy.

If you’re a redhead, believe you may carry one copy of the gene, or if you fall into Type I on The Fitzpatrick Scale, that means you need to be extra vigilant about sun protection.

Apply SPF of at least 30 when you are going to be outside, and generously reapply it every couple of hours, Adams says. Check out The 6 Steps Every Man Needs to Follow When Applying Sunscreen to maximize sun protection. 

You may need to take extra sun precautions than your darker friends do, too, Adams says. 

Wear a hat, sunglasses, longer sleeves, and stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
