Hi I’m Vivien Williams with a Mayo Clinic News Network Headline.
Bloating, belly pain, constipation or diarrhea. All are common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.
“IBS is sort of like the headache of the gut.”
Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Dr. Yuri Saito [Your’-ee Sigh’-toe] says just as with headaches, stress, lack of sleep and food can trigger IBS, which is a real issue for 1 out of up to 20 people.
“There’s no denying that when you’re under stress a lot of people say my gut gets over active or it shuts down. It’s not uncommon for people to have nausea, diarrhea or just shut down under those circumstances.”
So, to help manage IBS symptoms do what you can to reduce stress in your life. Meditate, try yoga, get outside or do whatever works for you.
Dr. Saito says two other ways to help manage symptoms are: get enough sleep and eat right. Go for a balanced diet with whole grains, fruits and vegetables. And drink plenty of water. Fiber supplements can help too. If you know certain foods trigger diarrhea or constipation, avoid them. And do probiotics work? Dr. Saito says the jury is still out on that. If you eat right, sleep well and manage stress but still have troubling symptoms, see your health care provider to discuss medications or other treatments that can help.
And that’s today’s Mayo Clinic News Network Headline, I’m Vivien Williams
