Hatha Yoga has a wide variety of poses and while some poses are inherently challenging, proper guidance and the use of props can make them more achievable for a starter.
In this class, Rewati covers most of the basic poses stressing on the technique to get into the pose and how to align the body as required by the pose. Rewati also gives an understanding of how breathe in various poses and how to get the inhalation breath and exhalation breath to assist in getting into and holding the pose. This allows us to begin our journey to connect the body and the breath and find out how they are subservient to each other.
We do some shoulder stretches and then combine them with standing poses to increase the degree of difficulty somewhat. Combining the use of props makes the pose more accessible to a wider group allowing the students to go as deep as their bodies allow. We also work on an understanding of spinal extension before forward bends using props in sitting poses.
We conclude with Baddha Konasana (Cobbler’s pose) with the spine extended on pillows to open up the body for better breathing and energisation.
